Lecturer: Xia Zhihong

Abstract:In this talk, we will discuss some recent results for surface diffeomorphisms, including some generalization to Poincaré’s last geometric theorem, several versions of C-infinity closing lemmas. The main tools are recent developments on contact geometry, and new tools we developed with respect to action and spin numbers for invariant measures.

Introduction to the Lecturer:Xia Zhihong was graduated from the Department of Astronomy of Nanjing University in 1982 and received a doctorate in mathematics from Northwestern University of America in 1988. He has taught at Harvard University, Georgia Institute of Technology and Northwestern University of America. In 2001, he became a Pancoe Chair Professor at Northwestern University. His main research fields include dynamic system and celestial mechanics. The main achievements include solving the century-old mathematical problem Painleve Conjecture, the chaos of celestial motion, the generic property of Hamilton system and a series of problems about topological entropy in ergodic theory.

He has won a number of major international academic awards, including the US Presidential Young Investigator Award (PYI), Sloan Research Fellowship, the first Blumenthal Pure Mathematics Progress Award (the world's best doctoral thesis in mathematics, one every four years), and Monroe Martin Applied Mathematics Award. He participated in the establishment of the Department of Mathematics of Southern University of Science and Technology in 2015 and served as the first department director from 2015 to 2018. At the same time, he participated in the establishment of the Future Science Award and has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Award until now.
